Can you imagine a church born in a noodle factory? Probably not, but that’s not the story of the Chinese United Methodist Church. This church, right here in the heart of Los Angeles, began its life over a century ago in 1887. It started as a small fellowship nurtured by a former missionary, Mrs. A.A. Birdsall. The Chinese United Methodist Church first met at 204 Marchessault Street. This humble beginning demonstrates the strong need for community and faith among the early Chinese residents of Los Angeles. The fellowship quickly grew, transforming into a mission just three years later in 1890. In 1893, they welcomed their first Chinese minister, Rev. Chan Lok Shang, and moved to 510 1/2 North Los Angeles Street. The Chinese United Methodist Church continued to evolve. By 1894, Rev. Chan Hon Fun took the helm, leading the growing congregation to yet another location at 522 1/2 North Los Angeles Street. This location served as their spiritual home for the next fifty years, a testament to the church’s growing roots within the community. The church’s journey was marked by a series of moves, each reflecting growth and change. The arrival of Rev. Wun Bew Wong in 1943 marked a pivotal moment. Under his leadership, the Chinese United Methodist Church truly blossomed. The congregation needed a dedicated space, a true home. The dream of a new building began to take shape. Thanks to the generosity of Dr. Lyons, Bishop Baker, Dr. Hole, and Dr. Middleton, the church acquired land at 825 North Hill Street. Construction began in April 1947, and the new sanctuary opened its doors on November 16th of the same year. This marked a new chapter for the Chinese United Methodist Church. The church continued to flourish under Rev. Wong’s guidance. He was even awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree in 1954. The church continued to expand, adding more rooms in 1969. The Chinese United Methodist Church has seen a procession of dedicated leaders, each contributing to its unique character and resilience. Today, the church stands as a beacon of faith and community, its story echoing the dedication and perseverance of the Chinese community in Los Angeles.
