Did you know the Sartre-Gymnasium in Berlin Hellersdorf wasn’t always called that? This impressive building opened on August 1 1991. It was initially known simply as the third Oberstufen-Gymnasium. Only later in 1995 did it adopt the name of the famous French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre.

The Sartre-Gymnasium is a public school. It’s a place of learning and growth. It boasts around 900 students. This makes it a significant part of the Hellersdorf community in Marzahn-Hellersdorf. The school has a reputation for its focus on individual self-discovery. It helps students prepare for their future careers.

Initially the school was smaller. The rising student numbers led to the addition of three temporary classroom buildings. These were containers. Then in 1999 construction began on a new permanent building. The whole school moved into this modern building on July 16 2001. This impressive structure is located at Kyritzer Strasse 103.

The architecture is quite striking. It was designed by the British architect David Mackay. The central feature is a long glass-roofed hallway. This acts as a vibrant hub. It connects classrooms and leads to a modern auditorium and the arts section. A gallery on the first floor houses the library teacher’s rooms and the cafeteria.

The building itself is a testament to thoughtful design. Light floods the building thanks to large windows and a southern and western exposure. The color scheme is calming. White yellow and blue tones create a Mediterranean atmosphere. This is said to contribute to a positive school environment.

Beyond its modern design the Sartre-Gymnasium also offers a wide range of subjects. It is known for its comprehensive language program. Students can learn English French Italian Russian and Latin. It also features a well-equipped sports area which includes a large indoor sports hall. There is also an outdoor space with a running track and a football field.

The school isn’t just about academics. It offers many extracurricular activities. These include choirs a web design club a technology club and various sports clubs. The Sartre-Gymnasium even has a school newspaper. The school’s commitment to well-rounded education is evident in its diverse offerings. In 2005 it was even ranked 98th among the 100 best schools in Germany.

So here we stand before the Sartre-Gymnasium. It is more than just a school. It is a vibrant center of learning. It’s a community hub where young minds are nurtured and futures are shaped. It’s a testament to the belief in education and the power of knowledge. This is a place where dreams are nurtured in a modern and inspiring setting.
