Clouds gather above Masjid Ghamama. Do you feel the weight of history here? Masjid Ghamama stands as a testament to faith and community. This mosque, whose name translates to “Cloud Mosque”, holds a special place in Islamic history. Located near Masjid an-Nabawi in Medina, Masjid Ghamama is believed to be where Prophet Muhammad performed Eid prayers in 631 CE. It’s also said he led prayers for rain here during a drought. As he prayed, clouds gathered, bringing much-needed rain. The mosque we see today is a result of centuries of renovation. The second Caliph Umar ibn Khattab built the first small structure here. Caliph Umar bin Abdul Aziz constructed a more notable building between 86 and 93 AH. Later, Sultan Hasan bin Muhammad bin Qalawan al-Shalihi renovated it in 1340 CE. Further restorations took place in 1622 and 1859, shaping the mosque into its current form. King Fahd bin Abdul Azeez al-Saud oversaw the most recent renovations, preserving its Ottoman-era architecture. Masjid Ghamama is more than just a building. It’s a place where the past and present converge. It’s a reminder of the power of prayer and the importance of community. Today, five daily prayers are held at Masjid Ghamama. Its internal sound system ensures the calls to prayer don’t clash with those from the nearby Prophet’s Mosque. Look closely at the facade. You’ll see five dome-shaped circles. Inside, six domes grace the roof, the largest positioned above the mihrab. This mosque carries the weight of centuries of devotion. It’s a tangible piece of Islamic history. As you leave Masjid Ghamama, remember the stories it holds within its walls.
