In the heart of Newton, Massachusetts, stands Saint Gregory the Theologian Seminary. It’s a place of quiet contemplation, a hub of theological study, and a testament to a unique partnership. Saint Gregory the Theologian Seminary isn’t just a seminary. It’s a bridge between traditions. In the 1970s, a remarkable collaboration began between the Melkite Eparchy of Newton and the Greek Orthodox Seminary. Melkite seminarians resided at Saint Gregory the Theologian Seminary. They shared meals, services, and some classes with their Orthodox counterparts. The arrangement allowed Melkite seminarians to study relevant courses at St. Gregory’s. They also commuted daily to Holy Cross School of Theology in Brookline. This was possible due to their shared Byzantine heritage. It allowed them to partake in theology courses alongside Orthodox seminarians, taught by Orthodox faculty. This interfaith exchange continued well into the 1990s, offering a unique blend of academic and spiritual learning. It fostered understanding and cooperation between the two traditions at Saint Gregory the Theologian Seminary. Eventually, the Melkite seminarians transferred to Pittsburgh. The legacy of this partnership, however, continues to resonate at Saint Gregory the Theologian Seminary. It stands as a reminder of the power of interfaith dialogue and collaboration.
