It was the first national parish for any ethnicity in the United States. Imagine German-speaking Catholics seeking a place to worship in their own language. They petitioned John Carroll. He was the Apostolic Prefect of the United States. In 1788, Carroll authorized Holy Trinity Church as a national parish for Germans. This was a groundbreaking moment. It predated the establishment of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
The original Holy Trinity Church building was constructed in 1789. Today, the exterior looks nearly identical to its original design. However, the interior has seen changes. A firecracker during a Fourth of July celebration caused a fire in 1860. The fire destroyed the interior and the roof. Subsequent alterations occurred throughout its history.
Holy Trinity Church played a vital role during the yellow fever epidemics. In 1797, the parish established America’s first Catholic orphanage. It was for children orphaned by the disease. This act of compassion solidified the church’s place in the community.
The church’s influence extended to music. Robert Elmore served as the church organist. He held the position from 1938 to 1955. His music filled the church with beautiful sounds for many years.
Holy Trinity Church is recognized for its historical significance. It was inscribed on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places on April 30, 1957. The designation protects the exterior. Alterations require approval from the Philadelphia Historical Commission. The Historic American Buildings Survey also documented the church.
A small cemetery resides in Holy Trinity’s churchyard. It is also historically protected. The cemetery inspired a scene in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem Evangeline.
In the 21st century, the number of parishioners declined. This was due to its proximity to Old St. Joseph’s Church and Old St. Mary’s Church. The area no longer had a significant German-speaking Catholic population. In 2009, Holy Trinity Church merged with Old St. Mary’s Church.
After the merger, the church saw infrequent use. This was due to the poor condition of the roof and floors. Masses were celebrated on holy days other than solemnities. From 2013 to 2015, Traditional Latin Masses were celebrated there. The last Mass inside the church was in 2017.
In 2019, the cost to repair the building was high. It was projected to be between $800000 and $1 million. Old St. Mary’s Church deemed it a financial strain.
In 2019, Archbishop Charles Chaput decreed that the church would be relegated to profane but not sordid use. This meant it would close as a place of worship. St. Mary’s Church would be permitted to sell it. However, this decree was later withdrawn and then reinstated.
