“Organized in June 1871 by Reverend William F. Butler.” Those words mark the beginning of a remarkable story about St. Mark’s Methodist Church. Here we stand before a house of worship with a rich history. It began with a split from Mother A.M.E. Zion Church.

St. Mark’s Methodist Church’s early days saw it move through several locations in midtown Manhattan. The church first resided in Washington Hall on Broadway. Then it moved to West 35th Street. It purchased the former Church of the Resurrection.

As the congregation grew, St. Mark’s sought a permanent home. Under the leadership of Dr. William H. Brooks and Rev. John W. Robinson, land was acquired in Harlem. This was between 137th and 138th Streets. This Gothic-inspired building was completed in 1926.

St. Mark’s Methodist Church achieved several milestones. It was the first to have a literary forum for all denominations. The church was first to gain full membership to the all-white annual conference. It was the first African American congregation to build a church costing over half a million dollars. Also it was the first to have two pastors appointed as district superintendents.

Pastors of St. Mark’s were active in community service. Rev. Brooks was a founder of the NAACP and the National Urban League. He was considered New York City’s most politically active African American minister. Rev. Dr. John J. Hicks was associated with the NAACP and the Harlem YMCA.

By the mid-1940s, St. Mark’s developed a strong social work agency. Educational and social service programs were created. In 1969, the church formed the Harlem Social Action Research Institute. This promoted social services through community relations and education.

Notice the architecture. Sibley & Fetherston designed this Gothic-style building. Its stone facade and central tower harmonize with the City College campus nearby.

Inside, the sanctuary is wide with a curved gallery. The church also includes a community house. These facilities were dedicated in December 1926.

The organ at St. Mark’s Methodist Church is a Casavant Frères creation. It was built in 1925. It originally had 55 stops and 55 ranks. The organ’s pipes are in chambers at the front corners of the sanctuary. Changes were made to the organ in 1974 and 1975.

St. Mark’s Methodist Church stands as a testament to faith, community, and social action. Its history reflects the struggles and triumphs of its congregation. It shows their commitment to Harlem and beyond. The church continues to serve. It enriches lives through worship, service, and fellowship. St. Mark’s Methodist Church remains a beacon of hope.
