“What does this place mean to New Yorkers?” That’s a question often whispered near the New York Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

Welcome. We stand at New York City’s official Vietnam Veterans Memorial. It is a place of tribute. The New York Vietnam Veterans Memorial honors those who served. It especially honors the 1744 NYC residents. They made the ultimate sacrifice in the Vietnam War.

The plaza wasn’t always a memorial. Once, this land was a roadway named Coenties Slip. Dutch sailors used it in the 17th century. By 1835, the slip was filled. It became Jeannette Park in 1884.

Later, Robert Moses rebuilt the park. He added horseshoe pitches and tennis courts. In 1971, Paul Friedberg redesigned the land. He added the amphitheater fountain.

In 1982, plans changed. Jeannette Park would transform into a memorial. It would honor Vietnam War veterans. Architects Peter Wormser, William Fellows, and writer Joseph Ferrandino won the design competition. Donald Trump even donated 1 million dollars. He served as co-chairman of the commission.

The park officially became Vietnam Veterans Plaza on July 20, 1983. The memorial was dedicated on May 6, 1985. Mayor Edward I. Koch led the dedication. It honored 1741 city citizens who died. It also honored 250000 men and women who served from 1964 to 1975.

After the September 11 attacks, the plaza underwent a 7 million dollars restoration. Mayor Rudy Giuliani rededicated it on November 9, 2001. A new ceremonial entrance was added. It provided access from Water Street to South Street. A black granite fountain was placed at the center. The Walk of Honor contains 12 polished granite pylons. They bear the names of all 1741 fallen.

The Friends of the Vietnam Veterans Plaza maintains this space. They ensure it remains a place of respect. The memorial preserves the names and voices of a generation. It recognizes their service and bravery.

The wall is etched with words from letters home. These poignant messages from fallen veterans are slowly fading. The Friends are dedicated to redesigning and rebuilding the wall’s infrastructure. The goal is to honor veterans for generations.

Take a moment to reflect. The New York Vietnam Veterans Memorial stands as a testament. It honors sacrifice. It ensures the stories of these brave New Yorkers are never forgotten. It serves as a constant reminder of their contributions and sacrifices.
