Melayu translates to “Fisherman’s Monument of Kampung Melayu”. This monument isn’t just a statue. Kampung Melayu, once a bustling fishing village, has witnessed the ebb and flow of time, its shores imprinted with the stories of those who cast their nets into the sea. Pollution has become an increasing threat to the livelihood of the Kampung Melayu fishermen. Oil spills, like the one reported in 2023, contaminate the waters, harming marine life and making it difficult for fishermen to ply their trade. The LPM (Lembaga Pemberdayaan Masyarakat), or Community Empowerment Institution, of Kampung Melayu, has been actively involved in addressing these environmental challenges and advocating for the well-being of the community. They understand that the health of the sea is inextricably linked to the health of their community and their cultural heritage, as symbolized by the Tugu Nelayan Kp. Melayu. The monument serves as a reminder of their past and a beacon of hope for a future where their fishing traditions can continue to thrive in harmony with a healthy ocean.
