Founded in 1886 the Auguste-Viktoria-Schule stands proudly before you. This impressive building wasn’t always a school though. It began life as a higher-class girls’ school. Imagine the young women who first walked these halls.

The Auguste-Viktoria-Schule’s current building a testament to the Heimatschutz architectural style wasn’t constructed until 1910 to 1912. Paul Ziegler the architect designed a building with a grand portal and expansive hallways. He also designed a second building in the courtyard. This building the former Hebbelschule now serves as House B of the Auguste-Viktoria-Schule. It was finished between 1912 and 1913.

In 1965 the school embraced coeducation welcoming both boys and girls. The former Hebbelschule buildings were integrated into the Auguste-Viktoria-Schule in 1970. Since 1991 bilingual instruction has been a key feature of the school’s curriculum.

The Auguste-Viktoria-Schule offers a comprehensive foreign language program. Students can choose from English French Spanish Latin and Danish. Beginning in the seventh grade selected subjects are taught in English. These include music physics and geography. Geography is taught in English until the Abitur the German university entrance exam.

As Flensburg’s largest Gymnasium the Auguste-Viktoria-Schule has four to six classes per year. The school actively participates in the EU Comenius project. The Baltic Sea Conference an event bringing together seven partner schools from Denmark Estonia Finland Lithuania Norway Poland and Sweden tackles challenges facing the Baltic Sea region. Students themselves maintain the school’s courtyard garden known as the “Green Island”. Since 2011 a cafeteria provides meals during breaks.

Over the years the Auguste-Viktoria-Schule has received numerous awards. These include the European Health Education Award the IHK Flensburg School Prize and the Baltic Sea Prize. The school has also been recognized for its innovative approaches to youth education and digital media. Many notable individuals were students or teachers here. Among them Ida Marquardsen composer of the Flensburg-Lied and Margarete Mitscherlich-Nielsen a prominent psychoanalyst.
