Gazing at the Original Statue of Liberty Sculpture, have you ever wondered about the stories she could tell? This iconic symbol of freedom, a gift from France to the United States, stands proudly on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. Dedicated on October 28, 1886, the Original Statue of Liberty Sculpture has become an emblem of welcome to immigrants and a powerful reminder of democracy’s ideals. The Original Statue of Liberty Sculpture, officially titled “Liberty Enlightening the World,” represents a woman draped in flowing robes, holding a torch high above her head. Her left hand grasps a tablet inscribed with “JULY IV MDCCLXXVI,” the date of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. Beneath her foot, a broken chain symbolizes the abolition of slavery. The idea for the Original Statue of Liberty Sculpture came from Édouard de Laboulaye, a French historian and abolitionist, who envisioned it as a monument to celebrate America’s centennial of independence. Sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi brought the vision to life, and Gustave Eiffel, famed for the Eiffel Tower, engineered its internal framework. Interestingly, the Original Statue of Liberty Sculpture wasn’t built in the U.S. Its copper sheets were hammered and shaped in France, then shipped overseas in crates. Assembly took place on Bedloe’s Island, later renamed Liberty Island. Initially a dull copper color, the statue oxidized over time, forming the distinctive green patina we see today. The Original Statue of Liberty Sculpture has endured its share of challenges. During World War I, an explosion on nearby Black Tom Island caused damage, leading to the permanent closure of the torch’s balcony to the public. Yet through restoration efforts and periods of closure, the Original Statue of Liberty Sculpture remains a steadfast beacon of hope and freedom, her torch still shining bright.
