Rising proudly before us, Leverett G Tower stands as a testament to Harvard’s history and residential life. Have you ever wondered what stories these walls hold? Let’s unravel the tale of this iconic tower.

Leverett G Tower is part of Leverett House. It is one of Harvard University’s twelve undergraduate residential houses. Leverett House is named after John Leverett. He was President of Harvard from 1708 to 1724. His presidency marked a turning point. Before him, every Harvard President had been a clergyman.

The Leverett Towers, including Leverett G Tower, were constructed in 1960. Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott of Boston designed them. These towers emerged from ‘A Program for Harvard College’. The program aimed to raise $82,500,000. It was for new undergraduate housing after the Second World War.

Leverett G Tower primarily serves a residential function. Inside, you’ll find single and double rooms. Each tower accommodates around 150 students. The top floors offer stunning views. Residents can see the Boston skyline and the Charles River.

The ground floor of Leverett G Tower holds a common area. Residents have affectionately named it “G-Hutch”. This space offers a place for students to gather and connect.

Leverett House itself has a rich history. In the mid-1920s, Harvard built student residences along the Charles River. These were initially for freshmen. McKinlock Hall, constructed in 1925, was one of these original buildings.

With the formation of Leverett House in 1930-31, Mather Hall was built. It stood across Mill Street. The dining hall and Master’s Residence were also added. In the early 1960s, expansion led to the construction of the Leverett Towers.

Distinguished individuals have called Leverett House home. Archibald MacLeish, Perry Miller and Lillian Hellman lived on top of F-Tower. Many notable alumni have passed through these halls. They include Aga Khan IV and Chief Justice John G Roberts.

The Leverett House shield depicts three hares. The family name is derived from the word “leveret” meaning young hare. The house colors are black and yellow. Leverett House even has a sister house at Yale Timothy Dwight College.

As we stand here, we’re surrounded by history and tradition. Leverett G Tower represents a significant chapter in Harvard’s story. It is a place where students live, learn and create lasting memories. The tower stands as a symbol of residential life at Harvard. It connects students to the university’s rich heritage.
