Did you hear about the golfer who blamed a tomb for his downfall at the Delhi Golf Course? It’s a tale as old as the course itself, almost. The Delhi Golf Course, nestled in the heart of New Delhi, isn’t just a place for a leisurely round of golf. It’s a living museum, a testament to centuries of history. Originally known as the Lodhi Golf Club in the 1930s, the course sprawls across land once walked by Mughal emperors and Lodhi kings. Imagine teeing off amidst ancient tombs and mosques, the remnants of dynasties whispering secrets in the wind. The Delhi Golf Course, redesigned by Peter Thomson and later by Gary Player Design, is a par-72, 6912-yard challenge. It boasts 14 lakes, 88 bunkers, and five different tee types to test golfers of all skill levels. The course is not for the faint of heart. Accuracy is key, as errant shots can easily find water, sand, or even a historic monument. Now, back to our unfortunate golfer, Stan Peach. During the 1968 Indian Open at the Delhi Golf Course, Peach was leading by a comfortable six strokes. Then, on the 7th hole, disaster struck. His tee shot landed in a bunker, and his second shot, in a moment of golfing infamy, bounced off the dome of a tomb. While it landed near the pin, his luck ran out. He blamed the spirits of the tomb for his subsequent collapse, losing the tournament to Kenji Hosoishi. The Delhi Golf Course offers more than just golfing challenges. Its clubhouse is a haven, with various dining options and a health club. The best time to visit is between October and March when Delhi’s weather is at its finest. So, next time you’re at the Delhi Golf Course, remember, you’re not just playing golf. You’re walking through history, hopefully without disturbing any ancient spirits.
