“Harbor views and artistic visions. Who knew they could blend so perfectly?” That’s what I thought when I first encountered the Atlantic Works Gallery.
The Atlantic Works Gallery stands proudly in East Boston. It is a testament to the city’s thriving arts scene. This gallery is more than just a space. It’s a vibrant community of artists.
Let’s step back in time. The Atlantic Works building was built in 1893. It originally housed Atlantic Works. This company produced steamship boilers and engines. Imagine the clanging and hissing of machinery. Picture the sparks flying as workers forged vital components for ships. The building was located at Chelsea and Marion streets. Later it moved to its current location. The building features a large arched doorway. A smaller arched doorway faces New Street.
Fast forward to today. The East Boston Community Development Corp saw great potential in this space. They renovated the Atlantic Works building in 2010. The renovation created affordable community space. It now houses a non-profit day care center. It also provides workspace for 44 local artists. The project received $3.4 million in New Markets Tax Credit financing. The City of Boston also provided significant support.
The Atlantic Works Gallery is located on the third floor. It is home to 29 members of the East Boston Artist Group. The gallery offers some of the most dramatic views in Boston. From here you can see Boston Harbor. There is also an outdoor sculptural space. It sits along the back of the building and adjacent pier. Atlantic Works also has a satellite space. It is called Studio 213. It is located in Boston’s SoWa district.
One unique aspect of the Atlantic Works Gallery is its history of supporting artists. When the building was renovated, many artists were in danger of displacement. To address this, a large number of volunteers helped with the artist relocation. Renovations started on the highest floor. This allowed artists to transition back with minimal disruption.
The Atlantic Works building also houses the Shining Star Day Care. It can accommodate up to 36 children. The day care includes classrooms. It also has indoor and outdoor play areas.
