Whispers of faith echoed through the repurposed barracks. Holy Name Catholic Church in San Antonio wasn’t always the grand structure you see today. It began humbly in 1957. The Archdiocese, recognizing the growing families in the area, purchased ten acres of land. A temporary chapel soon arose. It was a humble beginning for Holy Name Catholic Church. This temporary structure served a dual purpose. It housed the first and second grades at the front. The rest of the building served as a chapel. Imagine the children’s laughter mingling with hymns. In the summer of 1961, surplus barracks found new life. The men of the parish, with their own hands, transformed them into Holy Name Parish School. The Sisters of Our Lady of Charity staffed this new school. Progress continued swiftly. Groundbreaking for a permanent school building and rectory took place on April 15, 1962. By September, these structures stood ready. Holy Name Catholic Church continued to evolve. Two classrooms were added to the barracks building in 1964. The church itself underwent renovations in 1965. The barracks building adapted once more, becoming a hall, kitchen, and classrooms. A separate temporary classroom building joined the complex in 1966. A lighted baseball field followed in 1967, adding a touch of recreation to the growing parish. Father James C. Brunner guided Holy Name Catholic Church from 1969 to 1976. His tenure focused on financial stability. Difficult decisions were made, including discontinuing the seventh and eighth grades. However, this allowed the church to pay off a substantial debt. Interior improvements to the church and hall marked this era of careful stewardship. In 1977, the aging barracks building was renovated again. This time, it became a Religious Education Center. The seventh and eighth grades were reinstated, with sixteen students graduating in 1979. The story of Holy Name Catholic Church is one of constant adaptation. It’s a testament to the dedication of its parishioners and the enduring power of faith. From humble barracks to a thriving community, it continues to serve the faithful of San Antonio.
