Doesn’t the name “Hub City” spark curiosity? Compton earned this nickname due to its central location in Los Angeles County. Compton is one of the oldest cities in Los Angeles County. It was incorporated on May 11 1888. Compton became the eighth city in the county to do so.
Let’s dive into Compton’s story. The Tongva people first inhabited the Los Angeles Basin. Later the Spanish Empire expanded into this area. In 1784 the Spanish Crown deeded Rancho San Pedro to Juan José Domínguez. This vast tract of land spanned over 75000 acres. Domínguez’s descendants divided the land. They sold parcels to settlers.
In 1867 Griffith Dickenson Compton led 30 pioneers to this area. They sought new opportunities after the gold rush. Originally the area was named Gibsonville. This was after one of the tract owners. It was later renamed Comptonville. To avoid confusion with another town the name was shortened to Compton.
Life wasn’t easy for Compton’s earliest settlers. They faced harsh weather. Finding fuel was a challenge. It took almost a week to gather firewood from the mountains near Pasadena. Despite these hardships they decided to stay. Two general stores were within traveling distance. One was in Los Angeles and the other in Wilmington.
By 1887 the settlers wanted to improve their local government. They held town meetings to discuss incorporation. Griffith D. Compton donated his land. This helped incorporate and create the city of Compton. He stipulated that some land be zoned for agriculture. This area was named Richland Farms. In January 1888 a petition supporting Compton’s incorporation was sent to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. On May 11 1888 Compton was incorporated. The population was 5000 people. The first City Council meeting took place on May 14 1888.
However in 1890 residents voted to shed significant portions of the city. Compton was reduced to eighty acres. Only five voters remained. The city effectively ceased to exist. In 1906 lawyers filed suits to nullify the 1890 elections. This restored Compton to 600 acres. Compton was reborn with elections to fill open positions.
Richland Farms offered residents ample space. They could raise families grow food build barns and care for livestock. This attracted black families migrating from the rural South in the 1950s. Compton provided an opportunity to work the land for their families.
The 1920s brought the opening of Compton Airport. Compton Junior College was founded. City officials moved to a new City Hall on Alameda Street. A destructive earthquake caused many casualties in 1933. Schools were destroyed and the central business district suffered major damage.
Today Compton stands as a testament to resilience. It overcame challenges. It is a vibrant city with a rich history. From its humble beginnings to its rise as a cultural hub Compton continues to evolve. Compton remains a significant and inspiring place.
