Whispers of ancient weaving techniques brought them here. Here to Ikota Shrine in Osaka. Ikota Shrine, also known as Ayato Shrine, stands as a testament to time and tradition. Established in 77 CE during the reign of Emperor Konin, Ikota Shrine is the oldest existing shrine in Osaka. It holds a special place in local lore, connected to the intriguing legend of the Ayaha Princess. The shrine is dedicated to Ayahahime-no-mikoto, Emperor Konin, and Emperor Ojin. Originally built to house weaving skills brought from overseas, the shrine has been destroyed and rebuilt over the centuries. The main hall we see today was reconstructed in 1604 by the feudal lord Toyotomi Hideyori. It’s a beautiful example of gabled-roof architecture. Notice the subtle details and craftsmanship. The shrine grounds offer a peaceful respite from the bustling city. You can almost feel the echoes of history within the trees. The shrine is also one of two Ikota Shrines mentioned in ancient records. The other is located in Nishinomiya City. They share the same name but enshrine different deities. Look for the crest of the Toyotomi clan on the shrine’s gate. It symbolizes the connection to Hideyori and his support for the shrine. The shrine grounds also include a small subsidiary shrine dedicated to Inari Okami, the god of rice and prosperity. As you leave, take a moment to appreciate the serene atmosphere of Ikota Shrine. It is a hidden gem in Osaka, whispering stories of weaving, royalty, and resilience.
