In the bustling heart of Los Angeles’s San Fernando Valley stands Grace Community Church. It’s more than just a building. It’s a landmark in the evangelical world, a place where history has unfolded and continues to be written. Grace Community Church wasn’t always the megachurch it is today. It began humbly in 1956 as a mission of First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood. The first service took place on July 1st, led by Pastor Don Householder. Imagine the small congregation gathered, laying the foundation for what would become a spiritual home for thousands. The church quickly outgrew its original space and relocated to its current location on Roscoe Boulevard. They even started holding two Sunday services to accommodate the growing number of worshippers. After Pastor Householder and his successor, Richard Elvee, passed away, a young pastor named John MacArthur took the helm in 1969. Under MacArthur’s leadership, Grace Community Church experienced explosive growth, doubling in size every two years. This led to the construction of the Family Life Center in 1971 and a new Worship Center in 1977. By 2008, Grace Community Church boasted a weekly attendance of over 8,000 people. Grace Community Church is known for its commitment to expository preaching and its elder-ruled structure. It adheres to Calvinist theology and holds to the beliefs of cessationism, Lordship salvation, and the sufficiency of Scripture. The church also practices believer’s baptism by immersion. Grace Community Church’s history isn’t without its share of controversy. In recent years, the church has made headlines for its stance on COVID-19 restrictions, defying public health orders. This led to legal battles and even the temporary termination of the church’s parking lot lease. Grace Community Church remains a prominent voice in the evangelical world, a place where faith and tradition intertwine with modern challenges.
