Was it Gerhard von Scharnhorst himself who laid the first stone of the Scharnhorst Kaserne? Probably not. Let me tell you more about this place.
The Scharnhorst Kaserne is a Bundeswehr barracks. It is named after Gerhard von Scharnhorst. The barracks are in the north of Hanover. More precisely, it is in the Bothfeld-Vahrenheide district.
The Scharnhorst Kaserne is bordered by Ada-Lessing-Strasse to the west. This was formerly General Wever-Strasse. Kugelfangtrift borders it to the south. The main gate is to the east. It is located at Langenforther Strasse 1. This is also the postal address. Langenforther Strasse bends west. It forms a triangle with Ada-Lessing-Strasse in the north. A residential area is in the upper half of this triangle.
The Scharnhorst Kaserne was built around 1935. This was during the Wehrmacht’s expansion. Many parts of it are listed buildings today.
The history of the barracks is closely linked to the 1st Panzer Division. It is also linked to the Bundeswehr’s Kommando Feldjäger. Numerous other troop units have also been stationed here.
Currently, several units are stationed at the Scharnhorst Kaserne. These include the Kommando Feldjäger der Bundeswehr since 2013. The 3rd Feldjägerregiment 2 was established on April 1 2014. The Bundeswehr Technical College Hanover has been here since 1958. Also stationed here is the Bundeswehr Technical School. The Civil Education and Training Support Centre Hanover was established on April 1 2006. MAD-Stelle 2 was merged in 2012. The Heeresmusikkorps Hannover was renamed in 2013. The Association of Reservists of the German Bundeswehr SHK has been here since July 1 2024. BWI GmbH UHD Hannover went into service on December 1 2008.
Between the Scharnhorst Kaserne and Ada-Lessing-Strasse is a public officer’s mess.
Many units of the Bundeswehr were formerly stationed here. These include the Staff Company of the 1st Panzer Division. It was disbanded on June 30 2015. It was re-established as St/FmKp 1.PzDiv in the Henning von Tresckow Barracks in Oldenburg. The 1st and 3rd companies of Supply Battalion 10 were stationed here. They were disbanded on September 30 1994. Supply Training Company 7/10 was here. It was disbanded on September 30 1988. It was converted into 5./NschBtl 1. Supply Battalion 1 was partially active. It was disbanded on September 30 1994. Supply Company 720 was disbanded on September 30 1994.
The Bundeswehr Technical School Company Hanover was here. Data Transmission Troop 800/10 was also stationed here. Field hunter Company 1 was disbanded on September 30 1979. Field hunter Training Company 441 was moved to Braunschweig. Field hunter Battalion 72 was converted into FJgBtl 152. Mobilisation Preparation Group Field hunter Battalion 720 was also here. The 1st Field hunter Battalion 72 was disbanded. Field hunter Battalion 152 was merged into Tlen Feldjägerregiment 2. The 1st and 2nd Field hunter Battalions 152 were also disbanded. 6./Feldjägerbataillon 152 was an additional troop unit 2. Mobilisation preparation group Home Guard Brigade 62 was stationed here. NCO Training Company 15/1 was moved to Northeim.
Radio Communications Training Company 2/1 was renamed FmAusbKp 1/1. Radio Communications Battalion 772 was converted into FmKp 772. Radio Communications Company 772 was later converted into FmBtl 772. Radio Communications Leader Military District II was also here. Radio Communications Company 720 was stationed here. Army Music Corps 1 was renamed Army Music Corps Hanover. Maintenance Company 720 was also here. The Catholic Military Chaplain Hanover II was disbanded. The Hanover Specialist Medical Centre had sub-units in the Scharnhorst Kaserne. MAD Group II was stationed here. MAD positions 25 and 26 were also here. Material Equipment Sanitation Area 22/6 was disbanded. Grenadier Battalion 1 was renamed PzGrenBtl 11. Grenadier Battalion 2 was renamed PzGrenBtl 13. Panzer Grenadier Battalion 13 was relocated to Northeim. Panzer Grenadier Battalion 12 was renamed PzGrenBtl 312. Panzer Grenadier Battalion 312 was relocated to Dedelstorf. Battle Group A 1 was renamed PzGrenBrig 2. Panzer Grenadier Brigade 2 was relocated to Braunschweig. Light Engineer Battalion 511 was relocated to Passau. Radio Communications Training Company 792 was stationed here. Radio Communications Training Company 3/1 was also here. Barracks Sergeant Hanover was disbanded. Site Radio Communications System 218/121 was stationed here. Troop Doctor Hanover I was disbanded. Dental Station H 1 was disbanded. Dental Station H 203 was disbanded. Dental Group 210/1 was disbanded too.
As you can see, the Scharnhorst Kaserne has a rich and varied history.
