A beacon of faith. That’s how many describe Pilgrim Baptist Church in Nyack. Today, we stand before this testament to resilience and community. Pilgrim Baptist Church isn’t just a building. It’s a story woven into the fabric of Nyack since 1875.

A small group, led by Rev. Charles Mayo, Mr. and Mrs. Travis Armstead, and Mrs. Kassie Whines, felt a calling. They established Pilgrim Baptist Church above a carriage shop on Burd Street. Imagine the clip-clop of horses below as prayers rose above. The church’s early days were humble. Yet, the foundation they laid was strong, built on the principles of Jesus Christ and embedded in love.

In 1903, Rev. John Robinson took the helm. Under his guidance, the congregation grew. They purchased a building at 187 Main Street, a significant step forward. The church continued to flourish, becoming a vital part of the Nyack community. Later, Rev. W.C. Taylor led the church to even greater heights. The congregation expanded rapidly under his leadership, necessitating a larger space.

By 1960, Pilgrim Baptist Church found its current home at the corner of Franklin Street and High Avenue. The congregation marched into the new building, a testament to their enduring faith. The church continued to thrive under the leadership of Rev. O.T. Moore Jr. starting in 1980. Then, in 1990, Rev. Willie L. Hairston became the spiritual leader. He further solidified Pilgrim Baptist Church as a pillar of the community. He oversaw the growth of numerous ministries and outreach programs. A renovation in 2001 ensured the church could continue serving its growing congregation.

Pilgrim Baptist Church stands as a symbol of faith. It represents the unwavering dedication of its members over nearly 150 years. It continues its mission to serve the community through prayer, service, and outreach.
