Chungdong First Methodist Church holds a special place in Seoul’s story. Founded in 1885 by American missionary Henry Appenzeller it’s Korea’s first Methodist church. The church wasn’t always this grand structure. Initially it was a humble hanok a traditional Korean house. It was called Bethel Chapel a name that reflects its significance as a house of God. The church also played a vital role in the development of Korean Christianity. It performed the first Methodist baptism in Korea in 1887. In 1889 it established the first Christian women’s group. Today Chungdong First Methodist Church continues its mission. It holds services in both Korean and English. It houses a Mangon Christian History Reference Room. This museum showcases important historical materials. A new history museum opened in 2023 celebrating its rich past and continuing legacy.
