What secrets does Lake Paw Paw hold? This sprawling reservoir, officially known as Lake Paw Paw, Texas, whispers tales of transformation. Originally settled by cattle ranchers in 1862, the land surrounding Lake Paw Paw witnessed the rise and fall of industries. The timber industry boomed with the arrival of the Texas East and West Railroad, leaving behind traces of old rail lines that now serve as trails and roads. The Champion Paper Company acquired the land in 1946, using it for timber production and recreation. During this period, wildlife populations shifted, with a decline in many native species. In 1981, the state of Texas purchased the land, establishing Lake Houston State Park. It opened for day use in 1992 and overnight camping in 1995. The San Jacinto Girl Scout Council sold the adjacent Peach Creek Girl Scout Ranch to the state in 1990, expanding the park. In 2006, the park transitioned to the City of Houston, becoming Lake Houston Wilderness Park, Houston’s only park allowing overnight camping. A nature center opened in 2007, followed by park improvements in 2012, including new cabins and screened enclosures. Further renovations occurred in 2015, with a new restroom, cabins, and a bridge over Peach Creek. An archery range was added in 2019. Hurricanes Harvey and Imelda caused significant damage, leading to sustainable reconstructions, including renovations of the historic Girl Scout Ranch buildings. Despite its industrial past, Lake Paw Paw remains a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. It offers diverse recreational activities, including camping, hiking, and equestrian trails.
