“Did that sign just say ‘Baile an Rí’?” a confused tourist asked his friend, pointing at the sign. “I thought this place was called Kingstown?” His friend chuckled. “It is! Well, it used to be. You’re standing in Kingstown, but the Irish name for it is Baile an Rí, which also means Kingstown.” Kingstown, as you might have guessed, has a fascinating history closely intertwined with royalty and rebellion. Once a humble fishing village known as Dunleary, Kingstown’s fate took a dramatic turn in the 19th century.

Following a tragic shipwreck in 1807, the need for a safer harbor in Dublin Bay became glaringly apparent. Construction of a grand new harbor began, and in 1821, King George IV graced the town with his presence. To commemorate his visit, Dunleary was renamed Kingstown. The arrival of Ireland’s first railway in 1834, connecting Kingstown to Dublin, solidified its status as a sought-after seaside resort and a haven for Dublin’s elite.

However, the winds of change swept through Kingstown again in 1920, during the Irish War of Independence. As a symbolic act of defiance against British rule, the town shed its Anglicized name and proudly reclaimed its Irish heritage as Dún Laoghaire. But the legacy of Kingstown lives on in the annals of history, whispering tales of kings and transformations, of railways and resorts, forever etched in the heart of this charming coastal town.
