Did you know that Saint Marks Presbyterian Church in Newport Beach wasn’t always a permanent fixture? For two years this congregation was known as the peripatetic Presbyterians. They moved eight times. Their first meetings were held at the Oasis Senior Center. They even used the shop class space at Corona del Mar High School. Imagine the church organ nestled amongst driver’s education cars.

Saint Marks Presbyterian Church finally found a home on December 2 1962. This was a momentous occasion. The congregation moved into the Sea Byrd Restaurant in Newport Dunes. They had a regular pastor ordained deacons and elders for the first time. It coincided with Advent the season of anticipation for Christmas. This wasn’t mere coincidence. The interim Pastor Curtis Webster called it symbolic and beautiful. He believed it was a God thing.

The church’s growth was phenomenal. In 1962 they had 117 members. Today they boast 530. This growth reflects not just physical expansion but also spiritual enrichment. The church prides itself on inclusivity. Their motto is “Saint Marks is an inclusive community with open arms and open minds”.

Dick and Mary Allen have been members since 1976. They arrived from Chicago. They cite inspiration as a key reason for their enduring commitment. The church’s book club established 22 years ago is still thriving. It meets every Thursday morning. It welcomes both members and non-members.

In 2001 Saint Marks faced a unique challenge. They were involved in an interdenominational land swap with Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church. This deal allowed Saint Marks to relocate to a larger and more suitable location near Fashion Island. The Catholic Church covered the costs of the new facilities which included a larger sanctuary meeting halls offices and a preschool. This move while bittersweet was ultimately a beneficial step for the church. It allowed the church to enhance its mission and facilities for the 21st century. The deal involved overcoming significant hurdles. These included finding suitable land and navigating complex negotiations with the Irvine Company and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange. The success of this venture underscores the collaborative spirit and enduring faith that defines Saint Marks.
