Have you ever heard of a church so loved, it draws nearly 1,000 people to celebrate a new pastor? Right here, at New Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, that’s exactly what happened. In January 2024, this vibrant Los Angeles church, nestled at 402 East El Segundo, welcomed Reverend Sonja Dawson, Esq., as their new leader. New Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church wasn’t just celebrating a new pastor. They were honoring a legacy. Rev. Dawson is the daughter of the church’s founder, the late Rev. Dr. Lonnie Dawson. He led New Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church for almost 50 years, alongside his wife, Mamie Dawson. Before his passing in December 2023, he appointed his daughter as pastor-elect. The installation service was a powerful testament to the church’s deep roots in the community. Bishops, pastors, and evangelists from various denominations filled the sanctuary. The air buzzed with excitement. Pastor Michael Fisher of Greater Zion Church Family, Pastor Najuma Smith-Pollard of St. James A.M.E. Church, and Pastor George L. Thomas of Holy Chapel M.B. Church were just a few of the well-wishers. Even Bishop W. Todd Ervin of Church One in Long Beach noted the historical significance of a woman leading a traditionally male-led Baptist church. New Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church members weren’t just proud. They were ready to embrace the future under Rev. Dawson’s leadership. The guest preacher, Bishop Ernestine Cleveland Reems, delivered a rousing sermon. She encouraged the congregation to support Rev. Dawson and to “possess the land” with their faith. The energy in New Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church was palpable. It was a moment of transition, a moment of hope, a moment of faith. The installation of Rev. Dawson at New Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church wasn’t just a ceremony. It was a celebration of legacy, faith, and community.
