Could echoes of ancient chants still linger here? We are standing before the Capela de São Gens. It is a place where Romanesque, neoclassical and baroque elements meet. This unique church is located a short distance from the center of Fafe. It is in the parish of São Gens.
Let’s delve into the Capela de São Gens’ story. Once upon a time a monastery stood here. Some historians believe it was Benedictine. The oldest mention of this monastery dates back to the late 11th century. Bishop D. Pedro’s records mention it. Over time the monastery transformed. It became a collegiate church. In the early Middle Ages it rose to be one of the most important institutions in Monte Longo.
However information about the monastery is scarce. In the late 14th century Archbishop D. Lourenço Vicente sought to breathe new life into the church. He initiated restoration efforts. The early 18th century saw significant changes. Side and main altarpieces were added.
In 1774 the south facade was renovated. The facade the chancel and the pulpit were constructed. The 18th century also saw larger windows installed. The original cornice was replaced. More alterations occurred in the 19th and 20th centuries. Fortunately a restoration in 2005 brought back some of its former glory.
Now look at the Capela de São Gens’ architecture. The main facade and chancel embody the baroque style. The facade features a broken pediment. It is topped by a cornice. A doorway with a sculpted frame sits below a large window. A rococo shell adorns it.
Inside the church you will see a painted wooden barrel vault ceiling. The side and main altarpieces reflect the national baroque style. Neoclassical elements are also present. The Retábulo das Almas also features neoclassical design.
Almost all the original Romanesque construction has disappeared. This is due to 18th century modifications. Only the south side portal remains. Outside the church a bell tower rises. It has three arched windows. Pinnacles and a cross top it off. This is a vestige of the medieval period.
The church is dedicated to São Bartolomeu also known as Saint Bartholomew. The church has been known as Igreja Paroquial de São Bartolomeu de São Gens. The Igreja de São Gens stands as a testament to time. It showcases different architectural styles. It remains a place of religious heritage.
