In 1714, a fire swept through the Torre de la Parada. This grand hunting lodge near Madrid was reduced to ruins. Today, we stand before these remnants. Let’s journey back to its glory days. The Torre de la Parada was more than just a hunting lodge. It was a showcase of royal power and artistic splendor. King Philip IV, a hunting enthusiast, transformed this simple structure into a lavish retreat. He commissioned architect Juan Gómez de Mora to renovate it in 1636. The Torre de la Parada became adorned with masterpieces by renowned artists like Rubens and Velázquez. Rubens, along with his assistants, created a series of mythological paintings, bringing Ovid’s tales to life on canvas. Velázquez contributed with his iconic “jester” portraits and depictions of the royal family in hunting attire. Imagine the lodge’s walls adorned with these vibrant works. Think of King Philip IV strolling through these halls, surrounded by artistic treasures. Sadly, much of this grandeur was lost in the 1714 fire. The best paintings had been moved elsewhere, primarily in 1710. But the fire, set by Austrian troops during the War of Spanish Succession, devastated the lodge itself. While only ruins remain, the legacy of the Torre de la Parada lives on. Its artistic treasures, now housed mainly in the Prado Museum, offer a glimpse into its opulent past. The Torre de la Parada reminds us of the ephemeral nature of glory. It tells a tale of artistic patronage, royal leisure, and the destructive forces of war.
