From its humble beginnings in 1939 Temple Beth Shir Shalom stands as a testament to faith resilience and community. Located in Santa Monica this Reform congregation has a rich history spanning over eighty years. Imagine fourteen founders gathering to dream of a synagogue a beacon of hope during the dark days before World War II.
Partially funded by movie mogul Louis B Mayer their dream took shape. The new building opened its doors in 1942 as Beth Sholom Temple a house of peace. It was a haven at the quiet intersection of 19th and California Streets. Then almost forty-one years later a unique event shaped the Temple’s future. A beautiful interfaith wedding led to the creation of Temple Shir Shalom.
Initially holding services in a swimming school Temple Shir Shalom quickly flourished. It gained a reputation for its innovative music creative liturgy and dedication to social justice. In 1991 a pivotal moment arrived. Beth Sholom Temple was searching for a new rabbi. Simultaneously Temple Shir Shalom sought a permanent home. This convergence led to a merger forming the Temple Beth Shir Shalom we know today. Rabbi Neil Comess-Daniels became its leader a pivotal figure in its history.
Under Rabbi Neil’s guidance Temple Beth Shir Shalom became a cornerstone of Jewish Santa Monica. His tenure lasted until 2020 when Rabbi Alex Kress took the helm injecting new energy and vision. The Temple’s commitment to inclusivity is evident. Everyone is welcome regardless of background belief or identity. It’s a place of laughter learning and friendship.
The Early Childhood Center buzzes with activity. Religious school children’s smiles light up the halls. Teenagers share their wit and friends become family. Temple Beth Shir Shalom is more than a place of worship. It is a vibrant community fostering learning friendship and a commitment to social justice. A community that sings cries and changes the world together.
