Ever wonder about the earthworks that once protected Telgte? The Telgter Landwehr whispers tales of medieval justice and strategic defense. This wasn’t just any barrier. It was a statement of power and a testament to community cooperation.

Let’s delve into the story of the Telgter Landwehr. Telgte, a settlement that gained city status in 1238, owes its origins to the bishop’s estate. The bishop’s city judge held significant power during the 13th and 14th centuries. This influence shaped Telgte’s layout.

The Landwehr makes its first appearance in 1411. It’s mentioned during a description of lands near the Dieck or Muenster Gate. By 1437, it was explicitly named the town’s Landwehr. Interestingly, the Telgter Landwehr existed only north of the Ems River. There’s no evidence it extended to the city’s south side. This peculiarity likely connects to the presence of cathedral chapter estates in the southern part of Telgte.

The Telgter Landwehr’s uniqueness lies in its close ties to the surrounding parishes. Residents from nearby villages helped build it along the crucial route to Muenster near Handorf. Agreements from 1443 between Telgte and the Verth community highlight this collaboration. They detailed who was responsible for maintaining specific sections of the Landwehr. Town and parish sections connected. The Telgter Landwehr was part of a larger regional defense, not just a city-focused structure.

So, why this somewhat “un-urban” Landwehr? Jurisdiction plays a key role. Beyond the city walls, citizens only had usage rights. Since 1336, the cathedral chapter held Gogerichtsbarkeit. This gave them the right to construct the Landwehr. Around 1370, feuds with the Counts of Tecklenburg, who attacked via Bevern and Ostbevern, likely spurred Landwehr construction on the city’s north side. The south side remained unprotected.

A Landwehr encircling the entire city posed risks. It could have benefited farms liable to pay dues to the cathedral chapter. More importantly, control of the defense within the Landwehr’s boundaries might have shifted to the citizens. This occurred in other Muensterland towns.

The Telgter Landwehr wasn’t among the region’s oldest defenses. Instead, it arose from the emergency situation around 1370. This was also when the bishop initiated the construction of a city castle within Telgte. Its close connection to the parish Landwehr reinforces this timeline. It wasn’t based on parish boundaries, suggesting a later phase in Landwehr construction.

Consider the Telgter Landwehr as more than just a barrier. It represents Telgte’s history, legal complexities and community spirit. As you explore Telgte, remember the stories hidden within this earthwork. They speak of a town guarding its interests in a turbulent world.
