“Marvelous Endstead isn’t it?” I began my tour.

Endstead a grand old house stands proudly in Parktown Johannesburg. Built in 1903 by Ernest Willmot Sloper it’s a testament to craftsmanship and history. Sloper a renowned architect built Endstead for his own family. He used local materials koppie stone and timber shingles.

The panoramic views from Endstead are breathtaking. Imagine Sloper himself gazing across the ridge. He integrated his property into the landscape creating a terraced garden. Indigenous shrubs and plants thrive there. The rooms inside are spacious and bright. Sunlight pours in through the large windows.

Many original features remain intact. Timber paneling doors and fitted furniture showcase Sloper’s meticulous attention to detail. Pegged joints are a hallmark of his Arts and Crafts style. The house reflects the era’s aesthetic values. It truly is a fine example of early 20th-century architecture.

Over the years Endstead has seen several additions. Tony Bentel added a double garage. Solomon and Marshall enlarged the kitchen in 1920. A garage replaced the stables in 1923 thanks to Marshall and Fleming. A swimming pool and pool change rooms completed the transformation.

In February 2016 Endstead achieved heritage status. The Johannesburg Heritage Foundation nominated it. The Provincial Heritage Resources Authority Gauteng agreed. Endstead has high aesthetic historical and associative value. Its high degree of intactness is rare for a house over 100 years old.

Endstead is more than a house. It’s a piece of Johannesburg’s history. It reflects the city’s growth and evolution. It whispers tales of the families who lived there. It stands as a symbol of architectural excellence and heritage preservation. Let’s walk around Endstead. Let’s appreciate its beauty and significance. Let us remember its rich past.
