The echoing hymns. That’s what first strikes you about Yonsei University Church. This isn’t just any church. It’s a place steeped in history a beacon of faith within Yonsei University.
Yonsei University Church began its journey in 1986. It started humbly in Yeonheedong Seoul. Its initial location presented challenges. It was difficult to reach by public transport. The damp basement was plagued by mold. Rain often flooded the sanctuary. Despite these setbacks the church thrived.
Pastor Yoon believed God would guide them. He held monthly revival meetings. The congregation’s faith grew. They outgrew their space quickly. They raised offerings for a new building. They even bought a plot of land in Sungsandong. Unfortunately it was designated for a park. They then leased a temporary space in Mangwondong. But once again the church expanded beyond its capacity.
In 1992 a pivotal moment arrived. A church in Noryangjin was relocating. Pastor Yoon negotiated for the building. It was large and conveniently located. However two other churches had already made offers. The Yonsei congregation fasted and prayed. Miraculously the Noryangjin church chose Yonsei. The congregation’s special offerings exceeded the down payment amount. Yonsei Church moved into its new premises.
The church continued to grow. It purchased the Hindolsan Retreat Center. This center hosted seminars that grew immensely popular. It needed expansion. The center expanded to 150000 sq ft. Pastor Yoon also oversaw the addition of space for small group meetings.
The church’s growth necessitated another move. A building committee was formed. They assessed eighty potential sites over two years. They purchased 9.8 acres in Gungdong. After prayers construction began in 2003. They held special thanksgiving services during construction. The building was completed in 2005. It’s a stunning ultra-modern structure covering 427000 sq ft.
The main sanctuary is circular five stories tall with a 100m diameter. It features advanced technology. This includes live broadcasting capabilities interpretation rooms and a remarkable parking lot for 1000 vehicles. The church also built an education center and a World Vision Center.
Today Yonsei University Church stands as a testament to faith perseverance and growth. It is a place where prayers echo through the halls and a sense of community thrives. It is a place of worship a symbol of faith in the heart of Seoul.
