Drawn to the heart of Accra? Then look up. Here stands Calvary Methodist Church. It is a beacon of faith and community. This church has a unique story. It is interwoven with the history of Methodism in Ghana.

Methodism arrived in Ghana in 1835. Rev. Joseph Dunwell landed in Cape Coast. He brought the Christian message. Later, Rev. T. B. Freeman expanded this message. He reached the Ashanti Empire and Nigeria. He became known as the father of Methodism in West Africa.

The Methodist Church Ghana grew. It mirrored practices of other Methodist branches. Yet, it added its own vibrant touch. This included charismatic elements in worship. Think energetic praise.

Ethnic diversity presented challenges. In the 1920s, Accra had three Methodist congregations. Many members were of Ga ethnicity. Fante people followed in numbers. Sunday schools used Fante-Akan. Ga people had to adapt.

In 1965, Fante people built their own church. They called it the Calvary Society. It was near Wesley Circuit. This shifted it to Adabraka Circuit. The Methodist Church Ghana sought impartiality. It assigned neutral parties to decide on sanctions.

Expatriate parties offered opinions. They suggested reorganizing circuits. This would accommodate language barriers. The suggestion was declined. Calvary Society then petitioned to become its own circuit.

After bureaucratic struggles, Calvary Society’s request was approved. Its name changed. It became the North-Accra circuit. This is a testament to the church’s evolving identity.

The Methodist Church Ghana plays a vital role. It provides education and healthcare. The church contributes to Ghana’s strong educational system. It supports the Methodist University College Ghana. This began classes in 2000.

The church’s medical work is extensive. It offers crucial health services. The Methodist Church Ghana remodeled a local hospital. This broadened its medical outreach.

The church faced ethnic divisions in leadership. In the 1980s, a Fante native and a Ga native debated. Who should control the conference’s presidency? Power struggles also emerged. Debates over the church’s constitution arose. These led to suspensions and resignations of ministers.

Despite challenges, the Methodist Church Ghana persevered. It gained full independence in 1961. It adopted an episcopal structure in 1999. Today, it has 22 dioceses led by bishops.

The church embraced the charismatic movement. This brought vibrant changes. Short fasting and prayer events became regular. Attendance surged with hundreds participating daily. Members report experiencing healing.

Calvary Methodist Church also offers accommodation. The guesthouse provides a safe, charitable space. Backpackers, students, and young workers gather here. The rooms are clean. The welcome is warm.

Remember this church. It embodies faith. It shows resilience. It reflects community. It remains a vital part of Accra’s spiritual and social fabric. Calvary Methodist Church stands as a reminder.
