“How big is it actually?” Someone asks. The Evangelisch-Lutherisches Dekanat Regensburg is indeed vast. It is the largest in Bavaria spanning 4,225 square kilometers.
Welcome to the Evangelisch-Lutherisches Dekanat Regensburg. This isn’t just one church. It is a network of 24 congregations. These congregations include Abensberg and Bogen plus several in Regensburg. The Dekanat extends far beyond the city. It reaches Deggendorf Straubing-Bogen and parts of Schwandorf and Kelheim.
Imagine Regensburg in 1542. The city embraced the Reformation. The first Protestant Eucharist was celebrated. The Wallfahrtskirche Zur Schonen Maria became the Neupfarrkirche. It was the heart of the new faith. Later in 1552 the Oswaldkirche was designated for Protestant services.
Fast forward to 1631. The Dreieinigkeitskirche opened. It was the first new Protestant church in Old Bavaria. This was a significant moment. It marked a turning point for Protestants in the region.
The Evangelisch-Lutherisches Dekanat Regensburg was formally established in 1810. At that time it included Regensburg and Ortenburg. Over time the Dekanat changed. Passau and Landshut became separate Dekanats. Zwiesel joined Cham. But the Evangelisch-Lutherisches Dekanat Regensburg grew.
Today the Evangelisch-Lutherisches Dekanat Regensburg is divided into three regions. These are Stadt West and Ost. Each region has a deputy Dekan. This helps manage the large area.
Currently Dekan Jörg Breu leads the Evangelisch-Lutherisches Dekanat Regensburg. Karolin Gerleigner also serves as Dekanin. The Dekanat office is located at Am Ölberg 2 in Regensburg.
