Want to witness a monument to Barcelona’s Olympic dream? You are standing before the Velòdrom Municipal d’Horta, Miquel Poblet. It’s more than just a stadium. It is a symbol of the city’s ambition.

The Velòdrom d’Horta was built in 1984. It was designed by Esteve Bonell and Francesc Rius. The Velòdrom was the first of Barcelona’s construction projects. These projects were in preparation for the bid for the 1992 Summer Olympics in 1986.

This Velòdrom hosted the track cycling events. It also hosted the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in 1984. The venue quickly gained international recognition.

Interestingly, it was the first velodrome built to new FIAC rules. These rules permitted a 250 m track. This was only allowed if surfaced with wood. The building even won the FAD architecture prize in 1985.

The Velòdrom d’Horta has a capacity of 3200 seated and 11000 standing. The track is made of wood and measures 250 meters. The infield is covered with artificial turf.

It was the last permanent open-air velodrome. It was used for Olympic Track Cycling events. Since 2000, Olympic velodromes have been built with a roof.

Today, the Velòdrom Municipal d’Horta remains a multi-sport facility. It is open to the public. People can use it for many sports. You can visit the facility. You can also use it if you request it beforehand. The Velòdrom is open from Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 0:00 am. On Saturdays it is open from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. On Sundays, it is open from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm.
