Before reclamation Tai Kok Tsui was a long granite island. It was linked to the Kowloon Peninsula by a narrow isthmus. This land jutted out into the sea. Imagine the waves crashing against its shores.

Tai Kok Tsui’s name literally means Big Corner Mouth. This refers to its original shape. The area’s history is interwoven with the sea. It began as a fishing port. Then it transformed into an industrial hub. Oil depots and the Cosmopolitan Dock thrived here.

The reclamation of Tai Kok Tsui began in 1867 and continued in phases until the 1990s. This dramatically altered the landscape. The old industrial area was largely replaced with high-rise residential buildings. Many older buildings were vacated and are now set to be replaced. The area has been revitalized with new restaurants and bars.

The construction of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link caused controversy. Local residents protested. They feared unbearable noise pollution and structural damage to older buildings.

Today Tai Kok Tsui is a blend of old and new. It retains some remnants of its industrial past. Yet it is mostly modern high-rises. It’s a dynamic area that’s evolved significantly over time. Its transformation reflects Hong Kong’s own dynamic growth. The story of Tai Kok Tsui is one of adaptation resilience and change. A tale etched in granite and shaped by the sea.
