She and her son-in-law Charles Owens spearheaded the church’s foundation. The church faced challenges. A plot to bomb the church was uncovered in 1993. This underscores the battles faced by the Black community.
The First AME Church grew under the leadership of Cecil Murray. From 300 members to 18000. A remarkable transformation. It also became a center for social action.
