In the tranquil district of Lohausen, a poignant memorial stands: the Unbekannter Soldat. This monument, the Unbekannter Soldat, isn’t just a tribute to Germany’s unknown soldiers. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of a community. Originally erected in 1925, the Unbekannter Soldat was dedicated to the fallen soldiers of Lohausen and Stockum from the First World War. The citizens of Lohausen rallied together, raising funds and securing additional support from the city of Düsseldorf and Kaiserswerth district, to create a memorial for their lost loved ones. The Unbekannter Soldat’s seven-ton diorite base, sourced from the Westerwald region, symbolizes the unyielding unity of the community. Atop this base sits an eagle. This eagle embodies the collective grief for each of the 55 fallen soldiers. Its raised head signifies the enduring hope for a brighter future. After World War II, the Unbekannter Soldat took on a broader significance. The original bronze plaque, bearing the 55 names from the First World War, was replaced. The new plaque honors the dead of both World Wars. The Unbekannter Soldat continues to resonate with the community of Lohausen, serving as a symbol of remembrance, unity, and resilience. It is a place to reflect not only on the devastating losses of war, but also on the enduring strength and hope that rises from the ashes of conflict.
