Imagine a grand estate. It stands as a testament to noble aspirations. This is Villa Pallavicini Barbò. It has a rich history woven with family legacies and architectural ambition.
In the mid-15th century, the story begins. Francesco Sforza sought to secure Milan’s borders. He commissioned his son Tristano to build a defensive tower. This tower marked the boundary with the Venetian Republic. It was named Tristan’s Tower. The tower stood guard over the territories of Calciana.
Tristano’s sole daughter, Elisabetta, inherited the land. She brought it as dowry to Marquis Galeazzo Pallavicino. His son, Adalberto Marquis Pallavicino, yearned for tranquility in the 16th century. He sought refuge from destructive mentalities. He decided to build a sumptuous residence. It was a place for himself and his friends. His motto SIBI ET AMICIS is still visible. It is engraved on the façade above the porticoes.
Time marched on. The 19th century arrived. The last Marquis Pallavicino had no sons. He passed the Palazzo to his grandchildren. They were the offspring of his daughter and Count Barbò. The property became known as Palazzo Barbò. The Barbò family’s female descendants own it today.
Inside Villa Pallavicini Barbò, valuable frescoes adorn the walls. The Campi brothers painted them in the 16th century. Tristan’s Tower remains. Though modified, it retains its fortified appearance.
Around 1815, Countess Teresa Pallavicini Barbò initiated further changes. A drawing from this time shows the villa’s design. It reveals a two-story building with mezzanine levels. Rectangular windows and a central arched opening are visible. The drawing also depicts a circular hall with Corinthian columns. A coffered vault covers the hall. These drawings offer a glimpse into the villa’s neoclassical character.
In 1936, the Collegio della Guastalla relocated to Monza. Villa Pallavicini Barbò became its home. An additional floor was added to the villa. The lower part retained its neoclassical style. The drawings accurately depict the original design.
Villa Pallavicini Barbò stands as a blend of history. It combines military origins with artistic aspirations. It is a testament to the Pallavicino and Barbò families. Their legacies have shaped this magnificent estate.
