How about a journey back to 1894? That’s when Casa dels Lleons was born right here in Parc de la Ciutadella. Designed by architect Pere Falqués i Urpí, it was part of a project to house the zoological collection. This collection later became the Barcelona Zoo.

Casa dels Lleons translates to “House of the Lions.” It was originally built as an exhibit space. It housed cages for big cats especially lions. Hence the name.

Look at the building’s style. It is called Neo-Mudéjar. Notice the horseshoe arches on the front. They are made of exposed brick in alternating shades. Above the arches is a latticework that reaches the overhanging eaves.

At each corner of the front facade are red brick crowns. They feature the Barcelona coat of arms. See the lightning rods decorated with metal spheres. The crowns and eaves are covered in green glazed ceramic Roman tiles.

Casa dels Lleons underwent changes in 1924. It became the administrative headquarters for the Barcelona Zoo. It still serves this purpose today.

Much of the original design on the side and rear facades is gone. But old photos show two light-colored semicircular towers. They featured battlements and windows.

The Casa dels Lleons stands as a testament to Barcelona’s history. It shows the evolution of its zoo and architectural styles. Take a moment to appreciate this unique building. It blends Moorish Revival design with its functional role in the city’s zoological park. A true gem hidden in plain sight.
