Envision this: once a hated symbol of oppression, now a green lung. We are standing at the Parc de la Ciutadella. This park is more than just trees and paths. It is a testament to Barcelona’s resilience. It showcases the city’s transformation.
The Parc de la Ciutadella’s story begins with war and control. In 1714, Barcelona fell to Philip V of Spain. To prevent future rebellions, Philip V built a massive citadel. This fortress was the largest in Europe. The citadel was meant to control the Catalan people.
To build it, a large part of La Ribera was destroyed. Its inhabitants became homeless. Hundreds of Catalans were forced to work on the construction for three long years. The citadel became a hated symbol of Bourbon rule.
Over a century later, in 1868, the political climate shifted. General Prim decided to give the fortress to the city. The citizens viewed the fortress as a symbol of central Spanish government. Most of the buildings were demolished under Catalan orders.
In 1872, architect Josep Fontserè began transforming the site into a park. He believed gardens were the lungs of a city. The Parc de la Ciutadella was to embody Catalonia’s rebirth.
For the 1888 Barcelona Universal Exposition, the park was redesigned. Sculptures and art were added. This marked Barcelona’s shift to a modern cosmopolitan city. Half of the park was enhanced again for the zoo.
Look around. You will see the Palau del Parlament de Catalunya. This is the former arsenal of the citadel. Only a few structures from the old citadel remain.
Notice the Cascada. It is a monumental fountain. Josep Fontserè designed it. A young Antoni Gaudí may have contributed to it. It has sculptures and minor attributes. The press criticized it at first. They thoroughly amended it by the addition of a fountain. It loosely resembles Rome’s Trevi Fountain.
Consider visiting the Barcelona Zoo within the Parc de la Ciutadella. It opened in 1892. The zoo has a substantial collection of animals. From 1966 to 2003, it was home to Snowflake. Snowflake was the famous albino gorilla.
The Museum of Natural Sciences of Barcelona has sites within the park. These include a museum of zoology and a museum of geology. The Castle of the Three Dragons is part of the museum. Lluís Domènech i Montaner built it for the 1888 exposition.
Take a moment to appreciate the sculpture “Als Voluntaris Catalans”. It is a nude statue of a young man. It commemorates Catalan volunteers killed in battle. The statue faced violations during Francoist Spain.
Today, the Parc de la Ciutadella is a green oasis. It offers a peaceful escape from the city. You can rent a boat on the lake. You can wander through the gardens. The Parc de la Ciutadella stands as a reminder of Barcelona’s past. It shows its ability to transform and endure. It is a space for everyone to enjoy.
