“Aplegar-ho tot de bell nou, en Crist com a cap.” These words of Pope Saint Pius X resonate deeply within the walls of Parròquia Sant Pius X. Here we stand before a church, which serves the neighborhood of El Congrés i els Indians in Barcelona. Its story is intertwined with the history and faith of this community.

The construction of Parròquia Sant Pius X began November 20, 1960. It was finally inaugurated in 1963. The church arose from the fervor of the Eucharistic Congress of 1952. The parish first started its pastoral work in a location on Carrer de l’Espiga. Later, it found its permanent home on Carrer del Cardenal Tedeschini.

Josep Soteras, the main urban planner of the Congrés neighborhood, designed the church. Parròquia Sant Pius X was intended to preside over the Plaça del Congrés Eucarístic. The church boasts a unique hangar-like structure. It measures 45.87 meters long, 21.71 meters wide, and 11.89 meters high. The chancel adds another 3.47 meters to its depth.

Notice the exposed concrete arches and the expansive horizontal porch. Its simple yet forceful design makes it stand out. Parròquia Sant Pius X offers a striking contrast to the surrounding apartment blocks. Look up at the slender bell tower. It reaches a height of 50.38 meters. A delicate metallic cross of 9.91 meters tops it. The buildings behind the church embrace the structure. They form a backdrop that curves gently behind the apse.

Step inside Parròquia Sant Pius X. The interior spans 1750 square meters. It provides seating for approximately 800 people. The roof features curved prefabricated concrete panels. These panels create triangular shapes. Brick walls line the perimeter. Stained glass windows run along the upper sections. A side chapel is dedicated to the Blessed Sacrament.

Admire the stained glass and ceramic murals. They are the work of Grup Flama. Domènec Fita, Albert Garcia, Joan Lleó, Romà Vallès, and Francesc Carulla created them. Their artistry extends to the stone altarpiece and the baptismal font.

Listen closely. The organ’s rich sound fills the space. Gabriel Blancafort i Paris, a master organ builder, crafted it. His workshop was in Collbató.

Mn. Manuel Angel Pérez González serves as the rector of Parròquia Sant Pius X. He began his service here September 21, 2020.

Parròquia Sant Pius X is more than just a building. It is a center for community and faith. It offers various activities. These include catechesis, scripture study, and charitable assistance.

The parish boundaries include the streets of Garcilaso, Acàcies, and Concepció Arenal. Together with other parishes, it forms the Vilapicina district. It contributes to the larger pastoral area of Barcelona.

Parròquia Sant Pius X continues to be a beacon of faith. It is a place of worship and service in the heart of Barcelona.
