Amidst the dazzling spectacle of the Las Vegas Strip rises The Crystals. It’s a shimmering oasis of luxury. The Crystals isn’t just a shopping mall. It’s a testament to architectural ingenuity and sustainable design. The Crystals opened its doors on December 3, 2009. Its creation was a bold move during the Great Recession. Yet, MGM Resorts International, the original owner alongside Dubai World, envisioned its success.

The Crystals boasts a unique exterior designed by Daniel Libeskind. His signature sharp angles and abundant glass create a striking visual contrast to the surrounding architecture. Inside, David Rockwell’s touch is evident. A grand staircase invites exploration. Hanging gardens and a 70-foot wooden treehouse, housing a concierge desk and restaurant seating, evoke an indoor park atmosphere. Even the flower carpet changes with the seasons, inspired by the Flower Carpet event in Brussels. The Crystals is more than just aesthetically pleasing. It’s a marvel of engineering with nineteen uniquely shaped roofs, some overlapping in complex steel frameworks. Catwalks were even incorporated to maintain the lighting within the soaring 120-foot ceilings.

The Crystals earned LEED Gold Core & Shell certification in 2009. This achievement marked it as the largest retail district in the world to receive such recognition for its environmental consciousness. Features like skylights, reclaimed wood, and efficient water fixtures highlight its commitment to sustainability. The Crystals houses high-end retailers like Louis Vuitton, which boasts its largest North American store within these walls. You’ll also find a collection of gourmet restaurants and captivating art galleries. Water and ice installations by WET add to the unique atmosphere. “Halo” features clear cylinders with water manipulated by high-speed motors, creating mesmerizing vortices and colored lighting. “Glacia” showcases ice columns up to fifteen feet tall, uniquely carved by internal rods that heat and cool the ice, all while illuminated and accompanied by a tone poem by Mickey Hart.

The Crystals even hosts special exhibits, like the Princess Diana tribute exhibition in 2022, marking the 25th anniversary of her death. This expansive exhibition displayed many of her personal belongings. The Crystals continues to evolve. In 2016, ownership transitioned to Invesco and Simon Property Group. This change marked a new chapter for this architectural gem on the Las Vegas Strip. The Crystals remains a vibrant destination, showcasing luxury, art, and sustainable innovation. It stands as a symbol of resilience and a must-see for anyone visiting Las Vegas.
