Can you imagine a street so charming it inspired Detroit’s preservation movement? Here at the West Canfield Historic District plaque, we’ll uncover the story of this remarkable neighborhood. The West Canfield Historic District is more than just a collection of beautiful homes. It represents a turning point in Detroit’s history, a testament to the power of community and the enduring allure of the past. The land we stand on once belonged to Lewis Cass, a prominent Michigan statesman. His daughter, Mary Cass Canfield, inherited this parcel and in 1871, decided to create a new neighborhood. She named the street after her husband, Captain August Canfield, a key figure in the construction of the Soo Locks. Successful professionals flocked to West Canfield, building elaborate homes in the Queen Anne and High Victorian styles. These grand residences, set back on spacious lots, embodied the aspirations of a rising middle class. Imagine horse-drawn carriages gliding along the cedar-block paved street, past manicured lawns and ornate facades. The West Canfield Historic District thrived for decades. But the Great Depression brought hard times, and the neighborhood began to decline. By the 1970s, many of these once-proud homes stood in disrepair. Then, a determined resident named Beulah Croxford stepped in. She envisioned a restored West Canfield, a vibrant neighborhood that honored its past. Croxford spearheaded the effort to designate West Canfield as Detroit’s first historic district in 1970. Her tireless work, along with the Canfield West-Wayne Preservation Association, breathed new life into the area. Look around you. The cobblestones under our feet are a tangible link to Detroit’s history. They were salvaged from Atwater Street during the construction of the Renaissance Center. The restored street lamps and lush trees complete the picture, creating a streetscape that echoes the elegance of the 19th century. The West Canfield Historic District is a symbol of resilience, a reminder that even in the face of adversity, beauty and history can endure. It’s a place where the past and present intertwine, offering a glimpse into the heart and soul of Detroit.
