What does this unassuming marker tell us about Berlin’s past? This is the N44 V864.962 Plaque. It is one of over 2,800 memorial plaques and stones in Berlin. They commemorate important figures and events.

Berlin’s memorial plaques are more than just historical markers. They are a testament to the city’s commitment to remembering its past. The plaques honor those who resisted the Nazi dictatorship. They also commemorate victims of persecution. Some plaques are dedicated to people who made contributions to art, science, and technology.

The Berlin Memorial Plaque Programme began in 1987. It was timed to coincide with Berlin’s 750th-anniversary celebrations. This programme was inspired by similar initiatives in London, Paris, Vienna, and Hamburg. By 1992, over 500 porcelain plaques graced building facades. Wieland Schütz designed these plaques. The Royal Porcelain Factory, KPM, manufactured them. Before 1990, East Berlin installed over 400 memorial plaques. These plaques were placed in public spaces.

The plaques typically measure 60 by 40 centimetres. They feature a cobalt blue inscription on a white background. The words “Berlin Memorial Plaque” appear in capital letters. The KPM logo, a cobalt blue sceptre, is at the base.

Originally, a plaque cost 1200 Deutsche Marks. The Sparkasse of Berlin sponsored about 25 plaques per district in West Berlin. The first three plaques were placed on October 22, 1985. After the Peaceful Revolution, the program expanded to East Berlin. The Sparkasse again funded the program. By 2000, 350 panels were planned. They were valued at 3,000 marks each. The Historical Commission of Berlin oversaw the project.

After 2000, applicants had to pay 2500 Euros. They needed permission from the property owner. They also needed permission from the district council. The Historical Commission of Berlin ensures the plaque’s appropriateness. Wieland Schütz provides the graphic design. The KPM handles the final production. The applicant ensures proper installation. The plaque becomes property of the district office.

Aktives Museum has long supported Berlin’s memorial plaques. In the early 1990s, they replaced lost plaques. They worked to contextualize this form of remembrance.

The N44 V864.962 Plaque is a piece of Berlin’s memory. It connects us to the people and events that shaped the city. These plaques remind us that Berlin is a living history book. Each plaque tells a story. Each helps us remember.
