We are standing before AMOR, a vibrant testament to the universal language of love. You might notice a striking similarity to another sculpture in the city, the iconic LOVE in LOVE Park. They are both creations of the same artist, Robert Indiana.
AMOR, meaning “love” in both Spanish and Latin, arrived in Philadelphia in 2015 to mark Pope Francis’ visit. It was initially placed at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, gazing over the crowds gathered for the Papal Mass. Eventually, it found a permanent home here in Sister Cities Park, a stone’s throw away from its famous sibling. While LOVE has become synonymous with Philadelphia, AMOR holds a special significance. It reflects the city’s increasing diversity and serves as a reminder that love transcends language and cultural barriers. Just like the original LOVE, this sculpture, fabricated from boldly colored aluminum, demands attention. It invites us to reflect on love in all its forms – romantic, familial, and universal.
