Hidden amidst the Cambridgeshire countryside lies the charming village of Madingley. Madingley is a place where time seems to slow down, a world away from the bustling city of Cambridge, yet remarkably close. The name Madingley itself echoes its ancient roots, derived from “Madingelai,” meaning “Woodland clearing of the family or followers of a man called Mada,” a name whispered through the centuries from the Domesday Book of 1086. Madingley’s heart beats within the walls of its magnificent 16th-century manor house, Madingley Hall. Built in 1543 by Sir John Hynde, the Hall stands as a testament to the village’s rich history. Imagine the grandeur of the era as you picture Sir John overseeing the construction, perhaps envisioning lavish hunts in the surrounding parkland. The Hall remained in the Hynde family for generations, witnessing history unfold within its walls. In 1860, Queen Victoria herself leased Madingley Hall for her son, the future Edward VII, while he attended Cambridge University. However, his stay was cut short by the untimely death of Prince Albert. The Hall then passed through several hands, eventually becoming the property of the University of Cambridge in 1948. Today, it serves as the home of the University’s Institute of Continuing Education. Madingley is more than just its Hall. The village boasts a thriving community, complete with a restaurant, The Three Horseshoes, which retains its original bar. A pre-preparatory school educates the village’s youngest residents, and a 12th-century canonical sundial graces the south wall of the village church. For cricket enthusiasts, Madingley fields two teams in the Cambridgeshire Cricket Association leagues and another in the Cambridge Business House Midweek League. Just beyond Madingley’s borders lies a place of solemn remembrance, the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial. Donated by the University of Cambridge, this poignant site honors American servicemen who lost their lives in World War II. Rows of white headstones stand in silent tribute against the backdrop of the rolling hills, a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made. Madingley is a village that seamlessly blends history with the present. It offers a peaceful escape, a chance to immerse oneself in the stories of the past while enjoying the vibrant community of today.
