A magnificent span across the Pearl River Haizhu Bridge stands before you. Its history is a thrilling saga of war and resilience. Imagine the 1930s. The bridge then a gleaming three-hole steel truss bridge opened amidst a joyous crowd. Over a hundred thousand people celebrated its completion. Mayor Liu Jiwen unveiled the name Haizhu Bridge inscribed in huge characters by Kuomintang veteran Hu Hanmin.

Haizhu Bridge was more than just a bridge. It was a symbol of progress a testament to China’s ambition. The bridge’s construction a feat of engineering at the time. The American Markton Company and Shenchang Firm built it. They used local red clay for its solid foundation. This design decision proved efficient and cost-effective.

However war cast a dark shadow over Haizhu Bridge. The Japanese bombing raids damaged its opening and closing mechanisms. After the war the Kuomintang army blew it up in 1949 during their retreat. This act of destruction devastated Guangzhou. Many were killed or injured. The bridge’s remains a grim reminder of war’s cruelty.

But Haizhu Bridge’s story doesn’t end in destruction. After Guangzhou’s liberation the city began its painstaking reconstruction. The bridge’s repair a testament to the city’s tenacity. It took months to rebuild its four bridge piers. Obtaining steel was particularly difficult. However they managed to repair it by 1950.

Throughout the years Haizhu Bridge has been renovated many times. In 1974 they widened it to ease traffic congestion. In 1995 they reinforced it with a self-anchored sling scheme. The most recent overhaul in 2013 saw the installation of sidewalks for the visually impaired. Twelve feature walls were added to document the bridge’s rich history.

Today as you stand before Haizhu Bridge appreciate its enduring spirit. It survived war and destruction. Haizhu Bridge continues to connect Guangzhou’s north and south banks. This structure is not merely a passage but a living testament to the city’s enduring resilience and progress. The bridge is a symbol of hope that rises above adversity. Its story echoes through the ages.
