Overlooking the Rio Tinto stands Quinta da Revolta. Its name a whisper of rebellion. A story etched in stone and time.

Quinta da Revolta or Horto do Freixo is more than just a quinta. It’s a monument of public interest. Built between the 17th and 18th centuries this grand estate holds secrets within its walls. Its unusual name hints at a local uprising long ago. Perhaps a peasant revolt? Perhaps something more?

The Viscounts of Balsemão once owned Quinta da Revolta. It served as their summer home. They also possessed a magnificent palace in the city center. In 1851 they leased the property to a family member. Later they sold it to José Duarte de Oliveira. A wealthy Porto businessman. Alfredo Moreira da Silva a horticulturist bought it in 1918. His family still owns the quinta today.

The main house is two stories high with an L-shape design. Boxwood gardens surround it. A chapel is attached to the house. The courtyard entrance boasts the Viscounts’ coat of arms. Simple yet grand the house stands as a testament to its history. The chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Conception features stunning tilework.

Today Quinta da Revolta houses Horto do Freixo. This maintains the horticultural tradition. It is one of the city’s best gardens. A must-see for any gardening enthusiast. There are plans to incorporate Quinta da Revolta into the new Oriental City Park. It would become a private guesthouse. For now these plans remain on paper.

The stone speaks of generations. Of family gatherings summer breezes and whispered stories. It whispers of the Viscounts of Balsemão. Their legacy lives on in the very stones of Quinta da Revolta. It is a place of beauty. A place of intrigue. A place where history and nature intertwine. A place where the past whispers its secrets to those who listen closely.
