Who could have imagined a composer as influential as Heinrich August Marschner rests right here in Hanover? Heinrich August Marschner, a name synonymous with German Romantic opera, found his final resting place in this city. Born in 1795, Marschner’s path wasn’t initially paved with musical notes. He studied law in Leipzig. However, a fateful encounter with Beethoven in 1817 changed everything. Inspired, Marschner turned to composing, and his talent blossomed. His opera, “Heinrich IV und d’Aubigné,” premiered in Dresden in 1820 thanks to his friend, Carl Maria von Weber. Marschner’s career soared. He became the director of the Dresden opera and later the Kapellmeister of the Leipzig City Theatre. It was in Leipzig that he produced two of his most famous works, “Der Vampyr” in 1828 and “Templer und Jüdin” in 1829. In 1831, Hanover beckoned, and Marschner became the court Kapellmeister. His crowning achievement, “Hans Heiling,” premiered in Berlin in 1833. This opera, which explores supernatural themes and features expanded orchestration, solidified his place in German operatic history. It continues to be performed in Germany to this day. While he composed more operas after “Hans Heiling,” none achieved the same level of success. Marschner’s legacy lies in his pivotal role in shaping German Romantic opera, bridging the gap between Weber and Wagner. He died in Hanover in 1861, leaving behind a rich repertoire that continues to captivate audiences.
