“Leaving the oars” meant leaving the sea. That’s what the people of My Khe and Phuoc Truong used to say. Today we are standing in Phuoc My. It is a ward in Da Nang city. Phuoc My was formed from those two villages. My Khe and Phuoc Truong residents were known for their hard work. They were seafarers and farmers. When the sea was rough they farmed. When farming was slow they went to sea.
Phuoc My’s history stretches back. It was once part of Lu Dung district. This was under the Han dynasty. Later it became part of Champa. In 1306 King Che Man gave this land to the Tran dynasty. It was part of a wedding gift. He was marrying Princess Huyen Tran.
Phuoc My is about 1.5 km east of Da Nang’s center. The East Sea borders it to the east. An Hai Dong and An Hai Bac wards are to the west. My An ward is to the south. Man Thai ward is to the north. The ward covers 204 hectares. There are six residential areas in Phuoc My. These are Phuoc Truong. My Thanh. My An. My Quang. My Hiep and My Tan.
The sea is important for Phuoc My. My Khe beach is famous. Tourists come to relax and swim. Phuoc My people fish offshore. They also raise seafood. Tourism and services have grown here.
Phuoc My has a good transportation system. Roads connect all residential areas. It links cultural and tourist sites. It also connects to Da Nang’s city center. Phuoc My has changed a lot since 1986. It was a poor coastal area. People fished and farmed. Now it is developing quickly. New residential areas have been built. Traffic routes are better. Many city projects have been completed. Restaurants and hotels have appeared. They have changed Phuoc My’s look and feel.
The Phuoc My People’s Committee runs the ward. It follows local government laws. It manages the local budget. It carries out tasks from higher authorities. The Committee has a Chairman and two Vice Presidents. They oversee military and public security. Eleven civil servants work here. They handle culture, social affairs and justice. They also deal with finance and construction. The office is open Monday to Saturday morning.
There are several tourist spots in Phuoc My. My Khe beach is a resort. East Sea Park hosts events. There are also historical sites. These include the My Khe village communal house. And the Phuoc Truong village communal house. Phuoc My has come a long way from its humble beginnings. It continues to grow and change.
