Founded in 1936 as the School of Industrial Art the High School of Art and Design has a rich history. It initially occupied a former elementary school. Orange crates and plywood served as makeshift desks and storage. The school later moved to 211 East 79th Street. In 1960 it changed its name to the High School of Art and Design. A new location at 1075 Second Avenue followed. Finally in September 2012 the school settled into its current Midtown Manhattan location on 56th Street. The High School of Art and Design is a public school run by the New York City Department of Education.

This impressive institution was envisioned as a continuation school. Students who left school for work could attend for half days. It ultimately opened as a vocational high school. Aspiring artists and designers flocked to its doors. They sought to hone their skills in various disciplines. The school’s rigorous admission process includes an entrance exam and portfolio review. Freshmen explore various art forms. They then select a major for their remaining years.

Two art periods are scheduled daily for students. Eight art majors are available. Cartooning animation architecture graphic design illustration fashion photography and film video. Students benefit from the school’s well-equipped facilities. The Kenny Gallery named for its founding principal showcases student artwork. It is open to the public. The Black Box Theater is another invaluable resource donated by the Friends of Art and Design.
